20-Sep-2019
EPTISA has recently been awarded the project to support the Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme (ISWMP) in the Province of Jujuy, Argentina, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Its main objective is to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the province of Jujuy and address issues related to climate change through proper management of solid waste.

The implementation and operation of the ISWMP shall contribute to phase out the dumping of untreated waste and reducing the final disposal by recovering both energy and material. The ISWMP will also contribute to ensure that targeted municipalities develop and implement specific integrated waste management systems in their jurisdictions through policy strategies, the creation of employment related to waste treatment, the optimization of waste collection/transport and adequate disposal practices.
During four years EPTISA, in consortium, will support and enhance the Promoters’ capacity to implement the project in accordance with relevant national and international standards and to meet EIB financing requirements. In addition, it will contribute to the enhancement of local capacity in implementing and managing solid waste programmes and projects.
The Programme, which is organised in two phases, has the following main components:
  • Component 1 – Infrastructure Works: this component encompasses the infrastructure civil works (sorting and transfer stations, centres of treatment and disposal, rehabilitation of current dumpsites, landfields, etc.) located at “Chanchillos” and San Pedro where the two “environmental centres” will be located, as well as other places still to be defined by Jujuy. This component also includes the construction of a biogas plant with a nominal capacity of approximately 25,000 tons/waste per annum.
  • Component 2 – Equipment for local authorities and disperse system: comprises the collection equipment (bins, trucks, etc.) as well as other relevant equipment and measures to optimize the logistics of the current waste collection system in the province.
  • Component 3 – Institutional Strengthening for Local Authorities: comprises soft components linked to the requested social integration of waste pickers, public awareness activities, communication, education campaigns, training, etc.
  • Component 4 – Project Management: the final component includes all the activities and Works related to project preparation and management.
